Watch Out Carpenter Ants Are Swarming Ants!

Ant season is back in full swing, and they’re bound to be all over your home and lawn. Ants are one problem, but carpenter ants are a very different issue. They can do thousands of dollars in property damage, and if you’re not crazy about the idea of your property being infested by thousands of little pests, here are some tips that can help you eliminate the swarms you might see this spring.

Identifying a Carpenter Ant

Carpenter ants are one of the larger species of ants. They can grow up to half an inch long, and their segmented bodies have three distinct sections. They’re usually dark red or black in color, and queen carpenter ants have wings. They like to make their homes in moist or decayed wood, and you can often find them behind bathroom tiles, in your insulation, or even under your roofing. The easiest way to tell if you have a carpenter ant nest in your home is if you start to notice small divots or notches in the wood of your home or furniture. Carpenter ants eat and build their nests out of small wood shavings, and any areas they have eaten will have a smooth, well-sanded appearance.

Dealing with Carpenter Ants

If you’re looking into DIY carpenter ant control & removal, you have a tough problem on your hands. Off-the-shelf products aren’t going to cut it here. What you can do, though, is prevent the problem before it begins.  Start by sealing up any cracks around your windows, doors, siding, or roofing, as it’s one of the easiest ways for carpenter ants to find their way inside. Make sure that all of the leaky pipes in your home are sealed up, and any trees or bushes outside your home are kept trimmed and away from the walls.

What are Termite Mud Tubes?

Summer is coming soon, and with summer comes termite season! These common home pests can cause thousands of dollars of damage to you and your property, so it’s good to know how to prevent them. If you’re looking into how to spot termites in your home, the first place to start is with their mud tubes.

What are termite mud tubes?

As termites crawl around your property, they like to build little tunnels that connect them to food sources, water, or even just a good spot to store things. As a colony grows, it expands, and that makes more tunnels as well. If you’ve noticed little lines of mud across your home, it’s a good chance that those are termite mud tubes, made as they explore the area or even start eating the wood of your home. Make sure to clean them up as they appear, so that the termites can’t keep coming into your home.

A Closer Look at Types of Mud Tubes

There are four major types of termite mud tubes.

Exploratory Tubes, which are termites’ ways of finding new food or water sources on your property. These are often the easiest to see, and if you follow them, you might stumble across the larger nest.

Working Tubes, which are like termite highways– they take all the worker termites from one place to another, so that they can gather food and water for the colony. These will also lead back to the central hub of the colony.

Swarm Tubes, which are what happens when the working tubes get overcrowded. These are temporary tunnels for when something bad has happened in the working tubes, and the termites need a way around it.

Drop Tubes, which are termites’ ways of finding new food that might be below them, on a basement floor or even just a lower story of your home. These are easy to spot, because they look like small muddy stalactites.

Removing Termite Mud Tubes

Examine these areas to see if a nest is starting, or there are residues of a nest from last period. In both of these circumstances it might be necessary to hire specialist pest control experts to get rid of these creatures from the locations around the roof covering

If you consider every one of the above points, then you'll constantly be able to find an excellent roofing contractor who will certainly help you obtain the home of your desires. Think about employing only contractors that use a guarantee and will revisit your home to complete additional repair services if the spots do not hold. To stay clear of dripping you must ensure that the leading sheet overlaps the bottom sheet. Thankfully a few bold hearts have actually discovered to eliminate back. Maintenance is reduced as well as they do not need unique products around roofing sides, smokeshafts, or vents

Usage either ridge-vent, power vents, or wind turbine vents (conventional louver vents can be utilized also, yet you will certainly have to install even more than the average roofing contractor will want to mount to guarantee enough air-flow). If your attic room is not pushing out air like it should, it's costing you cash each month. Generally, the selection for roof is the choice of the property owner in addition to the referral of the engineer. Trusted business have gone under due to cases that have actually occurred without the defense of insurance

The Conflict Conundrum

The big, bad C word…CONFLICT.

It’s one of the most mis-understood “challenges'' in companies today.

I say this as a direct result of a recent experience my team and I encountered.

So in addition to it being timely, I felt compelled to share my thoughts and perspective on this matter hoping it will help you and your team as much as it’s helped me and mine...

Conflict by definition is, “A serious disagreement or argument, typically a protracted one.”

To most, the word itself evokes feelings of negativity.

I’ll be the first to admit...I was guilty of that myself.

However, knowing what I know NOW, my perspective has entirely shifted.  This has become one of those “Ah-ha” moments I wish I would’ve learned much earlier in the game of business…

It all started about 18 months ago...

My team and I were on one of our weekly leadership calls.  The topic of integrating a business operating system into our operations structure arose. We had been thinking about it for some time, and for whatever reason it was brought up this time, and we discussed it.

We all agreed that if our goal was to build and scale 8 and 9 figure businesses, it was definitely worth implementing. What did we have to lose?

We said we'd implement it for one year with 100% commitment and evaluate. (The business operating system we chose to incorporate was Vern Harnish’s Scaling Up.  In order to implement most effectively, we hired a Scaling Up coach with a year commitment so that we could implement the new operating system most effectively.)

One HUGE thing we discovered right off the bat (or should I say UNCOVERED) was worth the entire year’s investment.

This discovery came in two parts:

1. Conflict is good, not bad. Conflict must exist for growth to continue on a healthy and steady incline

2. Our realization that we (as a team) avoided conflict at all cost

1643924538702?e=2147483647&v=beta&t=lLHiI0vjuDqEeaX8BRM-p2F7Ofp3RCzp_M1UJ5w-kuQ

We were very complimentary of each other… that skill we had down.

But anytime even the thought of addressing an “elephant in the room”, caused many of us to scatter.  No one on the team took accountability on this front (even me, as the leader).

Our coach asked us all to read the book, Five Dysfunctions of a Team, which I highly recommend you pick up. (Tip: As a team leader, don’t read this book in isolation… read it with your entire team).

We went through the book as a team, chapter by chapter to address each of the dysfunctions outlined in the book.

We quickly became more and more comfortable with all the different areas of conflict. Slowly the negative connotation we all held about conflict began to fall away.

We then learned one of the most productive ways to embrace and address conflict...

Turns out….Open, honest and transparent communication was KEY to overcoming the conflicts we encountered.

Full transparency: It took us all a while to adapt to our “new world”. We had to continually encourage each other to embrace conflict (as our default behavior had been to avoid it on some level).

But we kept at it.  We made it part of our communication system on a daily, and weekly basis.

We became more and more comfortable vocalizing conflicts and then working together and individually to find a solution.

People on our team that would shy away from conflict in the past, started stepping up. Realizing that avoiding conflict caused way more damage than confronting it.

We began seeing differences immediately (internally as a team and externally with clients).

We were more accurate.

We were more aligned.

We were more efficient.

We trusted each other more.

We reached our goals sooner.

It all started with shifting our mindset on what conflict meant to us. Then we had the choice to reframe conflict on our terms. This led to an open, honest, transparent and authentic communication line.

You’ll hear me say this a lot: Communication builds trust.

And trust builds high-performance teams.

Addressing conflict is definitely something I wish I learned a long time ago...

Now think about conflict areas that exist in your organization.

How can changing your mindset of what conflict means change things for you and your team?

Remember, there’s no time like the present.

As always, feel free to reach out to me if you'd like to schedule a discovery call with my team... let's brainstorm how we can help you build your infinite business.

To your success,

David
